Cube Biz: Brenda Colling - soft goods and textiles.

Meet Brenda Colling, of Brooklyn, NY.  Her business offers soft good fabrication, textile restoration, textile and soft good rentals.

She has worked with interior and set designers, set decorators, magazine editors and private clients, creating made to order soft goods and upholstery. She is also an accomplished textile artist, with work in many private collections.

What inspires you, Brenda?

Everything textile from antiquity to the present day. I am especially drawn to handmade fabrics from Africa and Asia.

How did you get started in this business?

I began as a costume designer for theatre, dance and film. My colleagues from design school began to hire me for film and television interiors, and I gradually shifted from costumes to set decoration.

What frustrates you the most about this industry?

The usual freelancers lament. Feast or famine workload.

What job would you do if you didn't work in this industry?

Textile design.

What has been your favorite project you worked on?

I have many favorites. Period shows, such as Boardwalk Empire, have a variety of interesting projects. Madam Secretary also has unique challenges, from plane crash interiors, to Russian funerals.

What have you gained from being a part of ArtCube?

More business contacts!
